The Rebirth of Fresh.

There was a long road leading north up to Grand Canyon West, so we just looked in awe of all the canyons and mountains that we could see from the road...

Pictures truly can not do it justice. It was mainly my husband that wanted to see the Grand Canyon, but once I got there, I barely wanted to leave...

Camera angles are great...I barely look almost 9 months pregnant...

We got there very late in the afternoon, so the park closed about 2 hours after we got there...we ate a late lunch overlooking the canyon, then were on our way to Las Vegas!

Inside Caesar's Palace...

Caesar's Palace has a huge mall inside full of high end shops and restaurants...the only store I actually went in was H&M because I knew it was affordable and I did come out with a cute maxi dress and a few things for my kids...the hubby found nothing. It's not really his style...

Vegas in the daylight...

I did go to a couple of thrift and vintage stores while I was there.

The Attic is supposed to be the largest vintage store in the country and I think it was at one point...but a recent gas leak explosion led them to move across the street to a smaller location...

They had some fantastic pieces in their boutique, but I personally found them to be more than overpriced and the owners were rude. They never acknowledged anyone who walked in or offered any assistance...

After a few days in Las Vegas and realizing that we weren't heading to Los Angeles because of a 500% markup on hotel room prices due to NBA All-Star weekend, we started our drive home back to Texas.

One quick note...other than coming home on an international flight, I haven't had to deal with US Border Patrol. I forgot how close we were to the Mexico border coming home...and I would've taken a couple more pictures, but those agents looked like they were ALL business. No one was detained...we made it home safely.

My husband and I spent a little over a week traveling from Texas to Nevada and I am so glad we made this trip. We were planning to head all the way out to Los Angeles, but didn't realize it was the same weekend as the NBA All-Star Game...hotel prices were out of control...more than they normally are.

We stopped in little towns along the way for snacks and gasoline...

Our first stop in New Mexico was Roswell...

They take their alien reputation very seriously, no?

...even the local credit union.

We continued up to Route 66 since we planned to spend the night in Albuquerque...

...ate a couple of burgers, gambled a bit, then we were off to Arizona...

Surprisingly, one of our favorite stops was in Flagstaff, AZ. They had the cutest, historic downtown area and many kitschy diners & shops. We stopped there for the night and had an amazing dinner at a local restaurant & pub. I'll have to go back some day...when I can drink...ha!

After morning coffee and a delicious breakfast at the Galaxy Diner, we had a bit more driving to do to reach the Grand Canyon...

I really started to create this list because I wanted to sort of "discover" things about myself again and thought the task would be quite daunting. Once I started to create this list however, I realized I could come up with 202 things....everyone should try it. A very intropsective task.

I love cherries, but hate anything cherry-flavored....tastes like medicine to me.

I like watching documentaries.
I like watching foreign films with subtitles.
I'm horrible at saving money.

Except for mozzarella, I will not eat cheese. I really detest it.
I love to rollerskate.
I danced ballet for 10 years.
I hate wearing bras.
I immensely enjoy thrifting.
I didn't start thrifting until I was in my early twenties.
I move once a year...sometimes twice.
I've never been to California, but I think I'd really enjoy living there.
I once worked at a nudist resort.
I hate flying.
I want to travel overseas more.
I obsessively make to-do lists...almost everyday.

I wish I pursued photography or writing in college...or both.

Snowpocalypse in San Antonio?

Full disclosure. I hate cold weather. I especially hate snow. That's why I will only live anywhere that has a record of moderately warm temperatures throughout the year....like Florida or southern Texas. Needless to say that when I heard on the news that San Antonio would be getting "SNOW FLURRIES", I really didn't pay it much attention because they said the same thing about this time last year and nothing happened. Well the snow flurries came...along with lots of ice and that's how the city got shut down today. Argh! My kids were happy though....

Meanwhile, my family has been fighting a viral infection that seems to be going from one person to the next, hence my lack of blogging over the past few days...but it's still impossible for me to stay away from the internet completely. Here are a few things that have kept me entertained in between my fever-induced days in bed:

The Vintage Cabin has a great tour of her mom's house in Toronto...wonderfully vintage and seems so comfy.

Tracy over at Shutterbean has made some amazing juices...I still haven't bought a juicer yet, but seeing her yummy-looking concoctions has motivated me to get off my rear.

Style Like U is, in my opinion, the best fashion blog out there. Real people with real style and no one really looks like they are starving themselves, constantly brooding, or ridiculously posed.

...and they go to the person's home to do "closet" interviews...loves it!

Sarah Jessica of Magnolia Family Vintage and her accompanying blog, Sarah Hates Pants has been a favorite of mine for at least the past year when I discovered that she was a part of the team that organized the Austin Rock N' Swap that I attended last year...and I am so happy that she has started tweeting regularly again, because her tweets are the some of the funniest I read all day.

...and I nearly died when I realized a couple of weeks ago that she reads my blog regularly and we share the same birthday. We should become friends...

I'll be updating the blog regularly again next week...I'm sure I'll be feeling back to normal by then. (I hope)

Road Trip: Austin.

had a terrific lunch here...

Yesterday was the third and last day of tremendously wonderful weather here in San Antonio...so I decided to take a quick road trip to Austin...specifically South Congress Avenue. You could get lost on this street for hours with its many restaurants, vintage/antique shops, handmade shops & thrift stores. Normally when I go to Austin, I travel to thrift stores & vintage shops all over the city, but decided I would simply hang out on South Congress this time. I'm so glad I did.

so many shops and eateries based out of renovated airstream trailers.

hotel san josé. a little oasis in the middle of the city.

uncommon objects. you could spend forever looking at the antiques in this little shop.

saint vincent de paul thrift store. one of my favorite thrift stores in austin. great prices and i love that they have an eclectic outdoor window display.

I'll be making several more texas road trips before i head back to florida....i haven't even been to houston yet and I hear the thrifting is to die!

Road Trippin.

I am so excited to be taking a 10-day road trip with my husband in a couple of weeks! It started out that we were going to make the drive from texas to nevada to visit my brother in las vegas, but then we started talking about where we'd like to stop along the way. I'm an east coast girl and have been pretty much everywhere along the east coast except NH and RI (even been to the Jersey Shore...good times), but I have never been west of San Antonio so I started to think of all the places I've always wanted to visit. My husband's not from the United States, so there are MANY places he hasn't been, but ever since we met, he has always mentioned the Grand Canyon as a place he must visit, so that's definitely on our intended route.

Here are few other places we were thinking of...

route 66 (this one is mine...we must).

the hoover dam.

las vegas (we still gotta visit my little bro).

chateau marmont (another personal fascination of mine).

santa monica pier (because my brother thinks it's one of the coolest places he's ever been).

Where would you suggest? ...we'll take playlist suggestions as well (wink, wink).

I came across this image of Ms. Clark on the blog, Le Coil, and instantly loved this woman's quilted jumpsuit. I wanted to see more, so once I figured out her name I started to try to find out more about her. Ladene Clark is a model and knitwear designer whose pieces are absolutely stunning. One problem: her website is no longer functioning, so I'm not sure if she has taken a hiatus or selling her wears via another means. I will be sure to keep looking, but below is some of what I could find.

I only hope she is still creating...

Remember when I listed 10 of the 33 things that I wanted to accomplish before my 33rd birthday? Well, one of those "things" is to have Darling Nikki Vintage become my full-time job. I thought that would happen this spring after I have my baby...but life can take strange turns...

I was recently laid off from my day job at a commercial real estate office...like, just last Friday recent. Although I had planned to work until I was ready for maternity leave, I took this as a sign to get cracking with what really makes me happy....buying and selling vintage!

Since I have started studying photography, certain photographers have now stood out to me more and photographs have a different meaning when I look at them now.

When I first discovered Ann He's work a few months ago, I thought her photographs and concepts were beautiful. When I learned that she was only 16 years old, I thought to myself that she will have no problem turning her craft into a full blown career. Her knowledge of when and how to use of light and the shallow depth of field in her work is nothing short of brilliant at her age.

Every year in December, I have a nervous breakdown that I'm about to become a year older in January and ask myself...

"What have I done with my life???!!"

I set goals for the new year that I sometimes accomplish, but most of the time I don't. Last month I created a list of 33 things that I would like to accomplish this year before turning 33 on January 10, 2012.

Some are very personal goals and I will share them as they are accomplished, but here is a top 10 list that I would love to share with you right now:

learn new recipes.

I want to "wow" my husband with new recipes I've learned and have become pretty glued to the Cooking Channel. I especially heart Nigella Lawson...

move back to florida.

This is already happening next summer (fall?). Unfortunately, my husband and I never really adjusted to Texas and miss the beach and tropical weather. And he has developed horrible allergies here...

I will say that I really love Austin though!

This is why we may not be moving back to Florida until the fall. We are hoping to be able to spend one month (or more) here. My husband is from Costa Rica and his entire family is there. Plus my 3-year-old keeps saying he wants to go to the rainforest (I'm sure that's Diego's fault). We're saving our pennies!

learn how to make the best mojito.

I actually just started a class last Monday! I have learned so much, but I keep getting frustrated with my camera's manual settings. It will happen in time, I suppose.

I am both excited about this and nervous!

I so badly want to attend this year's Texas Style Council Conference and I just may go, BUT I will also be just about 38/39 weeks pregnant, so my unborn child will be determining whether I make it or not. My two boys were born just about at their due date, so I have high hopes again! My mother said I'm crazy...but I have good judgment and will play it by ear.

Saturday, March 12th will be a get-together of sorts for style, beauty, fashion bloggers and their readers to meet in downtown Austin for brunch, a boutique crawl, happy hour (no alcohol for me, of course!) and a night of dancing!

Sunday, March 13th will be the actual day of the Style Symposium. A few speakers have already been confirmed: Jennine from The Coveted and IFB will be delivering the keynote speech. Other bloggers include Miss James from Bleubird Vintage, Jessica from What I Wore, and Kendi and Bryan from Kendi Everyday.

I've already met Miss James here and Indiana of Adored Austin (one of the organizers of this conference) here, and would love to see them again!

I read about Project 365 via Vivianna's blog late this evening and immediately wanted to participate. I'll be sharing my wishlist for 2011 soon, but one of things on my list is to take more pictures of my everyday life including family and friends (which I'm horrible at). What better way to start and document my life than this?! It's a great motivator. I'd love it if some of my blog followers would participate and send me links...here are some tips you can use!

What's funny is I thought, "It's already 9pm and I haven't taken any pictures today or in the past week except for vintage going in my shop..." But I did! This morning I took pics of part of my delicious breakfast that was going to be part of a future blog post. So here it is:

Today is Election Day and I did my part as an American citizen. I haven't been in my adopted state of Texas very long, but I have heard and seen enough to make what I thought was an informed decision on its future. Besides that, I spent most of the day running errands around town...the weather was "perfect autumn", just cool enough for a light jacket or my favorite vintage sweater dress....I chose the latter.

I broke the first rule of blogging.

I stopped blogging.

When you suffer from the kind of morning (noon & night) sickness that I suffered from and could manage to still work through it, then let's talk. I WISH it were only nausea I was dealing with...

I am very excited about this pregnancy! This is my third and decidedly FINAL child. I have 2 boys and honestly wouldn't mind a third, but geez wouldn't it be fun to have a little girl to dress in tiny vintage dresses??? I say "YES!", so my fingers are crossed. I don't know what I'm having yet, mainly because I don't think I want to know. My first son was a surprise. With my second, I couldn't wait to find out....now, I think I want to be surprised again.

Now that I've got the good news out of the way and have been feeling better for about 2 weeks, I'm ready to get back to work!

Back in 8th grade, more than a decade ago...maybe 15 years ago, my best friend Keisha wore white socks with brown sandals that she was teased endlessly for all day long. There are many haute couture collections being featured in Paris this season, but none compare to Givenchy in my opinion. I just finished reading the book "Eat, Pray, Love" and haven't loved devouring a book in such a long time. Forget about how inspirational it is that the author took such great charge of her life, but I think that any woman at one time or another can identify with Elizabeth Gilbert's desperation at some crucial moment in their lives. The movie comes out this summer and I can't wait to see it!

The best feeling in the world is when you get a hit of inspiration to do something creative and can't wait to get started!

I spent part of the day yesterday looking for a cool centerpiece for my coffee table. I have a lazy susan on there right now that looks almost EXACTLY like this one...

It doesn't go with my new color scheme of deep yellows, grays & whites, so i've been hunting for something special. Cut to me (remember that Will & Grace episode?) having a noon-time conversation with one of my BFF's Nicole (she's a Nikki too) who makes amazing clothing and jewelry pieces out of old vinyl records and she and I were talking about putting some of her upcycled pieces for sale on Etsy.

I spent the next couple of hours looking at upcycled vinyl on Etsy to see what else was out there and I kept coming across these vinyl record bowls...

After not finding exactly what I was looking for, I hopped on over to YouTube to find a tutorial on how to make my own. Add a little acrylic paint and gloss...I'll have my own art piece in any color of my choosing! How cute is this video?
